THE RIVER OF GRIEF

 GOD’S PLAN

Your plan for your life may have nothing to do with God’s plan. God’s plan is what happens. Your plan is what you think will happen. This does not mean that you should not make plans. Life must be lived; plans must be made.

You may plant an apple tree with a vision of mouth-watering apples in your mind. Just when the apples begin to ripen, you get a new job in a new country. You never eat those apples, but you eat new fruit in a new country and someone else enjoys the apples you left behind. Or maybe a storm destroys your tree. You cannot eat those apples, but you still benefit from having planted and loved a tree, and so does the earth.

An old Chippewa axiom says, “If your eyes cry because of losing the sun, your tears will not allow you to see the stars.”

It can feel so sad to lose something or someone you cherish. No one can say that sadness is not real for you. Emotions are part of being human. To push away or deny feelings is to be less than alive. Feelings must be acknowledged if they are to be resolved and dissolved into love — not hidden away to become clouds that obscure the light from shining through. When we are free to experience a feeling completely, we are also free to move on from that experience. Emotions can be either a flowing river, cleansing and freeing, or a dam that stops the flow.

If you cannot linger to taste even one apple from the tree you have planted, feel your longing; cry your tears—but please do not take old tears with you to the new country to which you are traveling. Neither hold a grudge at the storm for destroying your tree.

The angels might change that old Chippewa saying to, “If your eyes cry too long because of losing the sun, your tears will not allow you to see the stars,” — and add another, “If your eyes never cry, your unshed tears may become clouds that obscure the light of God from shining clearly through.”

Maybe you thought you were planting the tree to eat apples. Maybe God put the vision in your mind, not to eat apples, but as part of a greater plan. Maybe it was as simple as planting and loving a tree, reaping the benefits of sun and exercise, filling your mind with the beauty of nature, giving back to earth and leaving a lovely legacy.

 FAITH

Faith is a vital, expansive part of life. Faith is a light shining in your heart. Faith exists in the now. Expectation jumps in and crowds out the innocent expansive energy of faith. Faith can let go. Expectation can only grab. Expectation insists on its own way and experiences a big letdown that can lead to depression and resentment when it does not get what it wants. Expectation travels heavy with demands, attachments, and ego. Faith travels light. Faith holds a vision put there by God. Expectation takes hold of that vision and calls it “mine."

An understanding of faith can be found in these words, “If our vision or medicine told us to move again we would do that, because we cannot be arrogant. We must accept what our vision tells.”  —Sun Bear, Native American of Chippewa descent

And from Hebrews 11:1, comes, “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.”

MOVING THROUGH EVENTS AND EXPERIENCES

The spiritual path has been called the razor’s edge. To walk the razor’s edge you must be brave at heart. This means having the courage to face and accept whatever comes your way. You reject nothing. You look at the plate of food that God puts before you and you say, "Yes, this food is for me, not someone else."

To be truly spiritual is to eat and digest that food. Only then can you be nourished. Only then can you move onto the next plate of food God has prepared for you. When you accept the food before you, acceptance turns into courage. You become a light in this world. You change what is yours to change and accept what is beyond your capacity to change. You neither run nor hide from the world. As Gandhi taught through his living, you become the change you seek. You move through even the tragedies of life with acceptance.

Every tragic experience, no matter how profoundly it may affect you, has a beginning and an end. A tragedy is an event that takes place within conceptual reality; it arises and then passes away. Like any profound experience, however, it may leave an impact upon you: an impact that can change your life forever.

When we cannot let go of a tragic experience, we live in unnecessary suffering, mired in painful emotions: bitterness, defeat, anger, sorrow. Although life moves on around us, we are unable to move on with life. Although the present moment shines brightly, we can see only the darkness of our own despair.

Although we cannot avoid tragedies, we can learn and grow from them. Grief is a natural reaction to tragedy. Repressing natural feelings of grief is unhealthy. So is dramatizing and holding onto suffering.

 THE RIVER OF GRIE

When tragedy first strikes, we may feel consumed by a river of grief—a river that runs so fast and deep, it feels like we are drowning in it. As the river runs its course, we discover it has its own Intelligence. It knows the way even when we do not. Eventually the river transforms into a small, bright diamond and finds a home in our heart.

It’s not that the grief becomes less; in a sense it is sharper and brighter, yet it no longer consumes us. It becomes a powerful force that Guides, Teaches, and Transforms. Within the depths of that small diamond, we find the spark of enthusiasm that is vital for life. We realize that we are still here, no matter what tragedy has befallen us.

As we accept what we cannot change, we begin to release the pain, or rather, the pain is released by a Higher Power. The strength of God reveals itself and shows us we are not alone. We find the strength to move through tragedy into peace. We live life from an even greater depth and like the sparkle that emanates from a pure bright diamond, we become a light in this world.

THE STRENGTH OF GOD

The strength of God reveals itself to us in many forms. Sometimes we wait for a message in the form of an angel or a miracle and miss the messages right before our eyes. We forget to see God in each other's eyes, in the rain, in the leaves, in the mountains, in the tragedies.

COMPASSION

Compassion is the beacon that guides and informs us in all our ways. Human beings are an interdependent species. We can turn to each other for comfort and support. We do not have to do everything in this world alone. If that were the case, these words would not be written and you would not be reading them. Support from others is most effective when we utilize it to find our own source of strength. This is the purpose of these lessons—to help you find the source of strength and peace within yourself.

Ego can know only a glimmer of the vastness that is God. No matter how far ego travels on the journey to God, eventually it vanishes in the quest, the way carbon atoms vanish into the clear brilliance of a diamond.

Emptiness and fullness are both contained within Consciousness. Darkness, the absence of reflection — and light, the presence of reflection— are both contained within and emanate from Consciousness.

In this world of duality, everything is known by contrast to something else. The concept of good is known by its counterpart evil—and the definitions of good and evil change over time and cultures. In 1692, in Salem, Massachusetts, twenty-four human beings were condemned as witches; nineteen were hanged and five died in prison. Although we may no longer imprison people for being witches, other atrocities are still committed in the name of good and evil.

Chang Tzu, the Chinese philosopher who lived from 399 to 295 B.C., said, “What is good and pleasant today, may tomorrow become evil and odious. What seems right from one point of view may, when seen from a different aspect, manifest itself as completely wrong.”

God is not a person, and yet each person is contained within God. Creation, as it appears to the human eye, and is defined and categorized by the mind, is an illusion. The only reality is God, and any words used to describe God immediately become false.

 Meditation on Meditation

Please find a comfortable position and allow yourself to gently relax. Let your breath be deep and even, your gaze soft upon these words. Meditation can come at any moment. Meditation can come now, as you reflect upon these words. The state of meditation is your true state. Angels cannot tell you what meditation is. Angels can only point the way. The angels beckon, call, and remember you to the peace that is your true nature. True meditation arrives when the meditator disappears.

J. Krishnamurti

What does it mean to be sensitive?

To be cognizant of colour and form, of what people say and of your response to it; to be considerate, to have good taste, good manners; not to be rough, not to hurt people either physically or inwardly and be unaware of it; to see a beautiful thing and linger with it; to listen tentatively without being bored to everything that is said, so that the mind becomes acute, sharp,

All this is sensitivity, is it not? So is there much difference between sensitivity and awareness?

I don't think so.

You see, as long as your mind is condemning, judging, forming opinions, concluding, it is neither aware nor sensitive.

When you are rude to people, when you pick flowers and throw them away, when you ill-treat animals, when you scratch your name on the furniture or break the leg of a chair, when you are unpunctual to meals and have bad manners in general, it all indicates insensitivity, does it not? It indicates a mind that is not capable of alert adjustment. And surely it is part of education to help the student to be sensitive, so that he will not merely conform or resist, but will be awake to the whole movement of life.

The people who are sensitive in life may suffer much more than those who are insensitive; but if they understand and go beyond their suffering they will discover extraordinary things.

Be gentle and conscious

Can you see the deer hidden here?

This morning two young deer were romping in the big green field outside my window. Yesterday too. I have binoculars so I can watch them close up and see their eyes, as if they are right in front of me.

I worry about them, when they leave the field and go close to the road. They seem to want to cross it, over to the cemetery and the stream beyond. They go close to the road and wait and watch. Suddenly they turn and run — moments later, each time, a vehicle comes speeding by. And I am relieved that they seem to have the intelligence to watch carefully and run away, at least, so far.

Yes, we must always be so careful, for the life of the deer, as well as our own safety, as we drive.

Life is so fragile, isn’t it?

This morning I dropped a glass I was putting into the cupboard and it fell onto my favorite old Swedish teapot and snapped off the handle.

Life is fragile. We must be gentle and careful as we make our way through it.

AWAKENING

AWAKENING

I shall lie my body down

Upon the soft warm earth

Now while I am alive

I shall give my spirit birth

Now before I die

I shall fold the sky

Over my head

And let the stars

Enter my eyes

Now while my blood is still red

I shall not wait for my last breath

Before I lay me down to sleep

Forever, to die, to cry, to lie

Beneath the deep

Deep firmament

I shall kiss the earth and repent

In whispers to her alone

I shall sacredly atone

Hail Mary full of Grace

Let me see thy holy face

Now we see through a glass darkly

But then we shall see

Even as we are seen

Tear away the holy veil

Let me sip from the holy grail

Spread a table before mine eyes

Of frankincense, gold, and myrrh

I shall anoint the child I AM with light

And give her second sight

Wrap her in swaddling clothes

And lay her in a manger

There I shall kneel and honor her

For she is me and I am her

There I shall surrender

Both past and future

At the moment of my birth

At the hour of my death

My body shall desert me

And my spirit shall fly free.

Serving God

Dearest, By now it should be apparent to you that you do your spiritual work for your own enlightenment. When you work for your spiritual enlightenment, you work for the enlightenment of all beings. You serve earth herself. You serve God whom angels love and serve.

TURN WITHIN

The entire state of the world is in turmoil and confusion. Even while feeling compassion, doing what we can  — we must learn to detach  — to know that we are “in the world and not of the world.”

We can let the world situation drive us crazy, drive us to despair  or drive us within, away from the desires and woes this world presents. The world is so big and there is so little we can do — and still, we must “do.”

We must not let the world drive us into despair and panic and depression, which is what it wants to do — the “world” being defined as the mass unconsciousness of egos. Egos run the world.

There is deep sadness when we first see this — and this sadness can be transformed — when we let go of what we cannot control — when we cease to identify with the madness of an insane world — when we allow ourselves to seek shelter, seek calm, seek peace Within.

We learn that Heaven really is within, in this present moment, and that nothing outside — nothing — need change for us to be in this Heaven. Heaven is always present — we need only turn our vision within and let it Guide us away from the insanity of the world, which is ruled by dark forces, to the Peace Within.

Earth is a living sentient Being. In Nature we can find healing. Go to Nature. If you live mostly in the confines of a city, buy a plant. Nurture and care for it. The plant will bring nature spirits into your home. It is part of nature, of earth. Love a plant, a tree, a flower, and it will love you in return.

When you can, plant a tree somewhere on earth.

Keep your feet on the ground. When you are lost in fantasy, lost in thought, lost in confusion, stamp those feet on the ground and bring yourself back into your body, here, now, alive with breath and bones and flesh and light.

Worry Rosary

Daniel in the Lions Den, painting by African American,
painter Henry Ossawa Tanner (1857-1937).

Worry is a way that some people mull over problems and arrive at solutions. Some people think worry is the same as love. They think if they are not worried about you, it means they do not love you; conversely, if you are not worried about them, it means you do not love them. Worry is a habit many people have, a way to fill up time and space until a problem is resolved, a way to connect with someone they love, especially when they feel helpless.

Nevertheless, long-term, excessive worry, with no end in sight, creates stress and the hormones released with stress. If you are in the habit of worrying excessively, you may want to ask yourself this question, “Is this worry serving or hurting me and those I love?”

When you are worried, you can ask God to give you faith. You can ask the angels to protect and guide your loved ones. You can remind yourself to relax. Breathe in love. Breathe out love. Visualize love as a soft golden light in your heart. Visualize love as a soft golden light surrounding the person or situation you are concerned about. Energy is real and energy is shared, even when you are physically absent from someone; so do your best to share the energy of love that supports and nourishes.

GUARDIAN ANGEL STORY

MIRROR

The angel paused a moment before holding up the mirror of her beauty before the lonely man standing at the edge of the bridge, teetering on the brink of jumping into the dark cold water. He shivered and thought of nothing. His thoughts had congealed into a dark mass like clotted blood in the bottom of his belly.

The angel moved closer until she was only a breath away and looked intently into his eyes.

He never saw the angel.

The angel began to sing, a song without words.

He never heard the angel's song.

The angel let the flame of its beauty burn brighter.

He took a step forward, his foot finding nothing but air. One more step and he would be free falling. One more step. Free falling from the pain of living. Free. The final fall. He stretched both arms into the cold dark air and stood on one foot, willing himself to lift that foot too. He closed his eyes and imagined himself sailing off the bridge, through the icy air, into the icy water.

The angel touched his face gently and thought of butterflies.

And the man felt a softness in his belly, tiny dots of softness, a sensation like cocoons hatching.

He never saw the angel.

He saw butterflies. Butterflies of light. Golden light. Flying from the center of his being, flying free into the night. Free flying.

He paused, balanced on one foot, his arms spread wide, and watched the butterflies fly golden into the sky. His other foot made its way back onto the bridge. Golden light suffused and surrounded him. He turned in a circle looking at it and when he stopped, the light was gone, and there was only him and the cold dark night. He closed his eyes and held the memory in his heart. Then he walked back to his car to drive back to the world he had sought to leave.

He never saw the angel.

Row your boat merrily

In an attempt to stay safe and secure in an unsafe and insecure world, human beings struggle for control. Angels never struggle. Angels accept the world as it is. Angels accept themselves as they are. Because angels accept what IS

Have you realized that it is as important to have faith and trust in times of great beauty as in great difficulty? Otherwise, fear can take over—fear that you cannot handle so much beauty, that you do not deserve such beauty, that it is all a mistake and you may lose it. You begin to identify with the outer beauty and your thoughts about it. You forget you are everything and so you try to control everything. Then you cannot enjoy even the good things that come to you.

People often pray for strength to bear their “bad karma.” Angels say, if you are going to pray, then pray for the strength to bear both the “bad” and the “good.” Strength and courage are as necessary to beauty as they are to difficulty.

Row your boat merrily. Life is but a dream. Life is but a stream, a flow of consciousness. Do not seek to change the world to suit your list of preferences. Look instead to see which way life is flowing and allow yourself to come into harmony with that flow.

Reviewing Your Lessons

When you go back and review a past lesson, you may see that lesson differently. This is because you are different. You are advancing on your path. Your mind is opening.

Your heart is a beautiful flower! A mandala. A perfect lotus. Your heart is the abode of all saints. Divine scents permeate your heart. Celestial music can be heard there. All wisdom, all compassion, and all love emanate from your heart. There the angels sing and worship God with their whole being.

A Loveliness

A swarm of ladybugs is called a lovelinessA loveliness of ladybugs. What if we replaced the idea of loneliness with loveliness? What if we were so in love with the purity of our own soul that we were never alone? What if we loved our aloneness? A loveliness of aloneness. What if sometimes we just laughed right out loud, all alone by ourselves, for no reason the mind can figure out. What if we laughed with the pure loveliness of being here now?

JOY

JOY

Where I go in this world,
I bring joy with me.
I don't ask for joy,
I ask, how can I
Bring joy to others!
Joy is abundant,
Don't seek it,
Bring it!

The Ride

The Ride

Put the ego in the back seat
Sit high and free
With love in the seat beside you
Breathing as one
In perfect harmony
Carefree
And continue
Moment to moment
in love
You'll see things
As never before
You'll see things
You've never seen before
You'll see things
You never knew existed
The ride will be short
Yet it'll last forever.

When Hearts Weep

WHEN HEARTS WEEP

The mind can be such a cruel hunter
It hunts for pleasure and not for hunger
It hunts to capture and control
It hates the beauty it seeks to destroy
It lives separate from all that is good
It does not know how to breathe One Breath
In Unison with all that IS,
And so it creeps into sacred places
Cradling weapons of death
And kills and kills and kills
Over and over again.

Disover!

Be like a baby
a baby discovers its toes...and moves into childhood on a path of discovery. Somewhere, ego, takes over. We forgot we are only discoverers in God's vast creation  we have never created anything, we are in control of nothing, we shape nothing  we can only Discover what IS. Then life is an exciting adventure in this pure and perfect present moment.

Find out for yourself what is True, otherwise it is a mere belief.

The original collection of these sayings, often credited to Mother Theresa, were actually created by a college student named Kent M. Keith and published in 1968 in a pamphlet titled “The Silent Revolution: Dynamic Leadership in the Student Council”. Here are the original expressions given in the pamphlet. Read it with an open mind and find out if what you read is true for you. Don't blindly believe. Lives are being destroyed by blind belief.

01: People are illogical, unreasonable, and self-centered. Love them anyway.

02: If you do good, people will accuse you of selfish ulterior motives. Do good anyway.

03: If you are successful, you win false friends and true enemies. Succeed anyway.

04: The good you do today will be forgotten tomorrow. Do good anyway.

05: Honesty and frankness make you vulnerable. Be honest and frank anyway.

06: The biggest men with the biggest ideas can be shot down by the smallest men with the smallest minds. Think big anyway.

07: People favor underdogs, but follow only top dogs. Fight for a few underdogs anyway.

08: What you spend years building may be destroyed overnight. Build anyway.

09: People really need help but may attack you if you do help them. Help people anyway.

10: Give the world the best you have and you’ll get kicked in the teeth. Give the world the best you have anyway.

Blind Belief

You are not asked to blindly believe or accept any of the ideas in these lessons. Blind belief leads only to sorrow and disappointment. You are simply invited to hold your heart and mind open to all things possible. You are invited to explore the possibility of the infinite.

When you employ your own intelligence to find your own answers, false conditioning begins to fall away. When what is false dissolves, what is true begins to reveal Itself. You find out what you really are—and are not. You discover your true divinity. At the core of this divinity is Love. Love manifests through each of us in unique and beautiful ways.
