STARS

Painting by Vincent Van Gogh
"Starry Night Over the Rhone"
STARS
by Sara Teasdale (1884-1933)

Alone in the night
On a dark hill
With pines around me
Spicy and still,
And a heaven full of stars
Over my head
White and topaz
And misty red;
Myriads with beating
Hearts of fire
The aeons
Cannot vex or tire;
Up the dome of heaven
Like a great hill
I watch them marching
Stately and still.
And I know that I
Am honored to be
Witness
Of so much majesty.

In his book, The Lost World of the Kalahari, Laurens van der Post recounts his time living among the indigenous people of the Kalahari Desert. He describes their shock when they discovered that he couldn’t hear the stars.

At first, they assumed he was joking or lying. But when they realized he truly couldn’t hear them, they were deeply saddened. To the Bushmen being unable to hear nature was the most serious affliction a person could have—a sign of profound disconnection from the world around them.

This was my favorite poem when I was 10 and lived on a hill covered with pine trees. In the summer, we children used old skis to slide down the hill on pine needles. At night, we'd lay on the hill, spicy and still, and gaze upon the stars, myriads with beating hearts of fire, and whisper secrets  I've now forgotten.

The Great Way

Hsin Hsin Ming

    Verses on the Faith Mind
    by Chien-chih Seng-ts'an
    Third Zen Patriarch [606AD]
    Translated by Richard B. Clarke

      The Great Way is not difficult
      for those who have no preferences.

      When love and hate are both absent
      everything becomes clear and undisguised.
      Make the smallest distinction, however,
      and heaven and earth are set infinitely apart.

      If you wish to see the truth
      then hold no opinions for or against anything.
      To set up what you like against what you dislike
      is the disease of the mind.

      When the deep meaning of things is not understood
      the mind's essential peace is disturbed to no avail.

      The Way is perfect like vast space
      where nothing is lacking and nothing is in excess.
      Indeed, it is due to our choosing to accept or reject
      that we do not see the true nature of things.
      Be serene in the oneness of things
      and such erroneous views will disappear by themselves.

      When you try to stop activity to achieve passivity
      your very effort fills you with activity.
      As long as you remain in one extreme or the other,
      you will never know Oneness.

      Those who do not live in the single Way
      fail in both activity and passivity,
      assertion and denial.
      To deny the reality of things is to miss their reality;
      to assert the emptiness of things
      is to miss their reality.

      The more you talk and think about it,
      the further astray you wander from the truth.
      Stop talking and thinking
      and there is nothing you will not be able to know.

      To return to the root is to find the meaning,
      but to pursue appearances is to miss the source.
      At the moment of inner enlightenment,
      there is a going beyond appearance and emptiness.
      The changes that appear to occur in the empty world
      we call real only because of our ignorance.
      Do not search for the truth;
      only cease to cherish opinions.

      Do not remain in the dualistic state;
      avoid such pursuits carefully.
      If there is even a trace
      of this and that, of right and wrong,
      the Mind-essence will be lost in confusion.
      Although all dualities come from the One,
      do not be attached even to this One.

      When the mind exists undisturbed in the Way,
      nothing in the world can offend,
      and when a thing can no longer offend,
      it ceases to exist in the old way.

      When no discriminating thoughts arise,
      the old mind ceases to exist.
      When thought objects vanish,
      the thinking-subject vanishes,
      and when the mind vanishes, objects vanish.

      Things are objects because there is a subject or mind;
      and the mind is a subject because there are objects.
      Understand the relativity of these two
      and the basic reality: the unity of emptiness.
      In this Emptiness the two are indistinguishable
      and each contains in itself the whole world.
      If you do not discriminate between coarse and fine
      you will not be tempted to prejudice and opinion.

      To live in the Great Way
      is neither easy nor difficult.
      But those with limited views
      are fearful and irresolute;
      the faster they hurry, the slower they go.

      Clinging cannot be limited;
      even to be attached to the idea of enlightenment
      is to go astray.
      Just let things be in their own way
      and there will be neither coming nor going.

      Obey the nature of things
      and you will walk freely and undisturbed.
      When thought is in bondage the truth is hidden,
      for everything is murky and unclear.
      The burdensome practice of judging
      brings annoyance and weariness.
      What benefit can be derived
      from distinctions and separations?

      If you wish to move in the One Way
      do not dislike even the world of senses and ideas.
      Indeed, to accept them fully
      is identical with true Enlightenment.

      The wise man strives to no goals
      but the foolish man fetters himself.
      There is one Dharma, not many;
      distinctions arise from the clinging needs of the ignorant.
      To seek Mind with discriminating mind
      is the greatest of all mistakes.

      Rest and unrest derive from illusion;
      with enlightenment there is no liking and disliking.
      All dualities come from ignorant inference.
      They are like dreams of flowers in air:
      foolish to try to grasp them.
      Gain and loss, right and wrong;
      such thoughts must finally be abolished at once.

      If the eye never sleeps,
      all dreams will naturally cease.
      If the mind makes no discriminations,
      the ten thousand things
      are as they are, of single essence.

      To understand the mystery of this One-essence
      is to be released from all entanglements.
      When all things are seen equally
      the timeless Self-essence is reached.
      No comparisons or analogies are possible
      in this causeless, relationless state.
      Consider motion in stillness
      and stillness in motion;
      both movement and stillness disappear.
      When such dualities cease to exist
      Oneness itself cannot exist.
      To this ultimate finality
      no law or description applies.

      For the unified mind in accord with the Way
      all self-centered striving ceases.
      Doubts and irresolutions vanish
      and life in true faith is possible.

      With a single stroke we are freed from bondage;
      nothing clings to us and we hold to nothing.
      All is empty, clear, self-illuminating,
      with no exertion of the mind's power.
      Here thought, feeling, knowledge, and imagination are of no value.
      In this world of Suchness
      there is neither self nor other-than-self.

      To come directly into harmony with this reality
      just simply say when doubt arises, "Not two."
      In this "not two" nothing is separate,
      nothing is excluded.
      No matter when or where,
      enlightenment means entering this truth.
      And this truth is beyond extension or diminution in time or space;
      in it a single thought is ten thousand years.

      Emptiness here, Emptiness there,
      but the infinite universe stands always before your eyes.

      Infinitely large and infinitely small;
      no difference, for definitions have vanished
      and no boundaries are seen.
      So too with Being and non-Being.
      Waste no time in doubts and arguments
      that have nothing to do with this.

      One thing, all things;
      move among and intermingle,
      without distinction.
      To live in this realization
      is to be without anxiety about nonperfection.
      To live in this faith is the road to nonduality,
      because the nondual is one with the trusting mind.

      Words!
      The Way is beyond language,
      for in it there is

      no yesterday

      no tomorrow.

Awakening

MY

BODY IS

A CANDLE

I have become a candle

The flame of my being is on fire

I am watching the candle

melt before my eyes

soon my eyes shall melt too

My flesh is dripping away

leaving my bones naked

and disconnected

The sockets of my eyes

have become empty

My spirit self rises

from what used to be me

and the me I have become

dips her spirit thumb

into the melted mass

of bones and flesh

and devours the me

I never was

Angels of Death

Angels of Life

arrive and say

'Turn  from

the unreal

to the Real'

and when I do

my spirit body

becomes a candle

My spirit self melts

and reveals a new self

and when I turn to look

I see nothing

and the new me

the me I Am now

begins to melt . . .

AWAKENING

AWAKENING

I shall lie my body down

Upon the soft warm earth

Now while I am alive

I shall give my spirit birth

Now before I die

I shall fold the sky

Over my head

And let the stars

Enter my eyes

Now while my blood is still red

I shall not wait for my last breath

Before I lay me down to sleep

Forever, to die, to cry, to lie

Beneath the deep

Deep firmament

I shall kiss the earth and repent

In whispers to her alone

I shall sacredly atone

Hail Mary full of Grace

Let me see thy holy face

Now we see through a glass darkly

But then we shall see

Even as we are seen

Tear away the holy veil

Let me sip from the holy grail

Spread a table before mine eyes

Of frankincense, gold, and myrrh

I shall anoint the child I AM with light

And give her second sight

Wrap her in swaddling clothes

And lay her in a manger

There I shall kneel and honor her

For she is me and I am her

There I shall surrender

Both past and future

At the moment of my birth

At the hour of my death

My body shall desert me

And my spirit shall fly free.

Leonard Cohen

 Bird on the Wire

The Lord is my Shepherd

Psalm 23

The Lord is my shepherd;
I shall not want.

2 He makes me to lie down in green pastures;
He leads me beside the still waters.

3 He restores my soul;
He leads me in the paths of righteousness
For His name’s sake.

4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil;
For Thou art with me;
Thy rod and thy staff, they comfort me.

5 Thou prepares a table before me in the presence of mine enemies;
Thou anoint my head with oil;
My cup runneth over.

6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me
All the days of my life;
And I will dwell in the house of the Lord
Forever.

♥ Kindness Meditation ♥

POEM TO MYSELF

When in doubt, be kind

I can be firm and still be kind

I can be honest and still be kind

I can tend the little seeds of kindness within me

I can shine when the world seems dark

so the tiny seeds

are not afraid

to grow

I can close my eyes

and breathe in kindness

I can let kindness fill me

There is no benevolent reason

for meeting hostility with hostility

no kind reason for perpetuating little wars

God knows there's more than enough war

out there

already.

Kindness Meditation

Place the palm of one hand on your heart with your fingers wide open. Hold it there and just feel. Feel what is. Be soft. Open. Receptive. Feel the energy between your hand and your heart.

Remove that hand and place your other hand over your heart. Be there with the energy. Notice if there is any difference between the two hands.

Which hand to you prefer to hold over your heart? Notice this and place that hand over your heart. Then place your opposite hand over that hand. When you can, close your eyes for a moment and give your full attention to your hands on your heart.

Feel the exchange of energy, from hand to heart, heart to hand. Feel the energy circulating. Notice how your breathing becomes deeper and more relaxed as you continue this meditation. Your heart is the real container for your spirit. It’s where your spirit resides, like a pure bright crystal, emanating light and love and life. In your heart is Life. Is Love. Is Light.

Life. Light. Love.

Thank God for the writers and artists, the musicians, and sages.

Because you're not what I would have you be, I blind myself to who, in truth, you are. Madeleine L'Engle

And when we do this ― we blind ourselves to who, in Truth, we are. What we do to others, we do to ourselves.

Madeleine L'Engle was a wonderful writer of children's books, books for adults, and poetry. Her book, A Wrinkle in Time, was one of the first books I read as a child which began to wake me up to Reality to what I knew in my heart was true. Thank God for the writers and artists, the musicians and sages.

The very first book from my young childhood, which showed me what I knew deep inside, was one I have also written a lesson about
Miss Hickory, by Carolyn Sherwin Bailey. It revealed to me that we all have hard hickory nut heads. We must begin the spiritual journey to melt into the softness of our heart which is the only true strength.

The 3rd book from childhood that I also I fell in love with was, The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnettt, published in 1911. This book was also about the spiritual journey, of growing from darkness to light.

We must all grow from darknessc our negative thoughts, feelings, and actions to the Light of Truth.

THE OCEAN

My body is the ocean

Shining beneath the moonlight

I rise up to meet the shore

And back again

To meet my destiny

My mantra

Is the sound of waves

My meditation

Is upon my own sweet self

My passion flows like honey

My sighs are sighs of love

I sink into my own depths

And know that I Am God.

Mark Twain (1835-1910) American Writer

"Nothing exists. All is a dream.
God—man—the world—the sun, the moon, the wilderness
of stars—a dream, all a dream; they have no existence.
Nothing exists save empty space—And you.…
And you are not you—you have no body, no blood, no
bones, you are but a thought."

—Mark Twain, 'The Mysterious Stranger'
