Snow in Amish Country
Right now I am out in the country -- Amish country. The Amish here are very conservative -- old order Amish-- a sect of Amish that adhere very strictly to their religious beliefs and avoid modernization for the most part.. They wear only black and very dark blue. The women wear full bonnets and long skirts and white aprons. The men have beards but no mustaches and always wear hats. They drive horse and buggies everywhere. No electricity. Most of them have many children. The children only go to 8th grade. They marry young, usually. It is another sort of world. The Amish here speak a Swiss dialect of German, though they also learn English. There is so much snow here. The hills and fields are white and flowing with snow. So beautiful. So cold.

ReplyDeletethere's been some kind of Movie in my head... remembering the Amish schoolmates, about their way of living, about god And Living as close to God as possible, about mistaking things and when thinking becomes judgement of something and where I am mistaking things.... and in the end:
ReplyDeleteI very much like how you didn't do all that in your Post, but just described what there was to notice. Just see.
Thanks for a morning lesson :-)
Will try that today.
Love to you all
Petra
Hi Petra, thanks for your comment about my post. Yes, there is a lot to notice here. Now I am back in Jamestown, but sometimes the Amish come into town, both the old order that lives out where I visit, and a new order--called Mennonites. They have fewer restrictions in their religious beliefs. I like that people from different backgrounds and beliefs can share the same space peacefully.
