Poetry

Stone walls do not a prison make,
Nor iron bars a cage;
Minds innocent and quiet take
that for an hermitage;
If I have freedom in my love.
And in my soul am free,
angels alone, that soar above,
enjoy such liberty.

Richard Lovelace (1618–1657), 1642 The Poems of Richard Lovelace. London: Unit Library, Ltd., 1904. 69-70, To Althea From Prison, iv.

  1. If someone in prison could know this, then so can we. The bars of my prison are my negative thoughts.

  2. Hi Kevin,
    I can imagine, as long as you define them as 'yours' ,it is a prison. Instead of seeing it as coming from outside and just running through you.
    Love to you .... love is you

  3. Yes, good point, Monika. Negative thoughts are not "mine" -- they come from outside. When I accept them, then they become the bars of my prison. Thanks for the love and back to you again, Kevin
